Mark Spoon - Germany(Jam
& Spoon)
DJ / Producer / Remixer
Mark
Spoon is one of the busiest and most striking personalities of the European
Dance Business
today !. He is one of those people everyone has a story about...
A
man like a fairy tale figure - described in Germany's '98 "Mayday" booklet.
Mark
Spoon is in a league which in Germany only Sven Vath and Westbam could claim to
belong to. He does not operate within a category, Spoon is one !. That has a lot
to do with the way he looks and his provocative appearance. He is, as it were,
the personified state of emergency. Spoon's reputation as a party monster and
backstage Casanova is known throughout the globe. Mark Spoon is one of those
guys who seem to be living manifestation of a Bukowski character, the gossip
surrounding his famous quotes and bizarre excesses may have even inspired the
grand master of street literature to a story, if he were still alive. And even
if
this attitude has not been well received by all and sundry, one thing is sure:
without Spoon, Techno music would have been a lot more boring.
At
the beginning of the nineties, Spoon celebrated his first success as an Techno
DJ at the Sound Factory in Frankfurt (warehouse parties organized by Alexander
Azary using England's club concept as a role model and at the same time
forerunners of rave scene in Frankfurt). As well as the first "Logic Records"
A&R Manager, during the "Snap" era, Spoon played a decisive role in penning the
success story of Germany's former premier dance label, discovering artists such
as "Dr. Alban" and providing his first remixes for Alban and other Logic acts.
At
the end of 1991, Mark left his A&R position to pursue a further calling. In
co-operation with Sound Factory partner Azary, Spoon opened XS Club, which, with
innovative concepts and international DJ bookings, set new standards in style in
Frankfurt's clublife until its closure at the end of 1994.
Jam
El Mar and Mark Spoon released their first work as Jam & Spoon in 1992, titled
"Tales from a Danceographic
Ocean".
The track "Stella" was also on this EP. It made the charts in England and was a
huge
club anthem throughout
Europe. Shortly after, they succeeded with the remix of the classic track
"Age of Love", one of the anthems of the the year 1992 and one of the
top-selling remixes in Techno history. This was followed by the double album
"Tripomatic Fairytales 2001 & 2002". It's first single, "Right in the Night",
stormed the charts throughout the world.
Jam
& Spoon were not only reowned for their own production, they were also hired by
an increasing number of international pop icons for remix work. In 19, after
they had already tried their hands on work by acts such as Frankie Goes to
Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, Quincy Jones, Queen, Enigma, Stereo MC, to name but a
few, their work in this field was awarded as "Remixer of the Year" by England's
premier music magazines.
From
1993 until 1997, Mark Spoon hosted the last great era of the now legendary
Sunday morning shift at the "Dorian Gray", thus securing a frontrow place in
Frankfurt's DJ Hall of Fame. During this period, Mark and his partners used the
venue of the airport club for a whole series of successful events such as
Euphoria and Holy-X-Mas raves, which often last several days.
In
1997, Jam & Spoon released another of their own albums "Kaleidoskope". It's now
most famous single,"Kaleidoscope Skies" was a smash hit for many months all over
Europe.
In
order to investigate dance music styles which were more compatible to the clubs,
Jam & Spoon usually used the B-sides of their 12", or just created new
pseudonyms to express their musical alter egos. "Tokyo Ghetto Pussy" is the most
important project with which the due achieved world-wide chart success in the
years 1995 and '96. With their current project Storm, whose first single made
the German top 20, the pair appear to be moving on directly from this success.
1999
is looking to become a very important and varied year in the production work of
Mark Spoon. After a studio phaseof
almost two years, not only Jam & Spoon will return with a new long player,
rather it is also high time to get on vinyl the energetic sound of Storm.
And
- as if it weren't enough already - the first Mark Spoon LP under his own name
will be released, on which he will feed his fans with the DJ styles he prefers
himself.
Around the globe, Spoon has gazed out from behind his record decks over almost
every club or event worth anything. The highlights of his career certainly
include his gigs at "Tribal Gathering" in the UK, his numerous "Mayday"
appearances and his three sets at the final "Love Parade" demonstration, where
he performed in front of 200,000 people gathered at the Grosser Stern and
millions in front of their TV sets.
As
a resident DJ, Mark Spoon currently appears on a regular basis at the following
renowned clubs in Germany: Kraftwerk KW - Munich, Pleasure Dome - Augsburg, Mach
1 - Nuernberg, Airport - Wuerzburg, Tribehouse - Neuss, U60311 - Frankfurt,
Kalkscheune - Berlin.
